Highscore - what's your best game?
« on: July 05, 2010, 05:02:22 PM »
Hi there,
I played the game several times but I don't know what's a really good Highscore. So maybe someone just gives me his/her best. At the Moment my best one is around 80.000 (retired in December 1674). Is that good, average or bad? Thanks!

Wow. No, haven't had more than 7,000 by retirement, so I'd say that's high.

I think my current pirate is in some sort of a glitch -- it's now September 1748, and he's showing no signs of slowing down (no skill point losses or thoughts of retirement). Even with the unexpected extra time, and bagging about 200 ships (and trading them in when I can), I only have about 7,000 saved up for retirement.

My highest score is 46,551, Retired Janurary 1678, with 76 ships captured.
The next one is 30,652, retired June 1687, with 103 ships captured.

I'm not sure how I managed to get such a good score with the first one - it was one of my earlier games.  The 30k game had me capture two treasure galleons in that career, as well as more ships overall, and I was sure I was going to beat my previous high score.

@drkpixie: it sounds like you chose to drink from the Fountain of Youth when you made your character.  That's how it works - you don't suffer skill loss and can therefore go on indefinitely.

You should post difficulty and version number.

I will be adding on-line scores in the future, so you will easily be able to compare scores. Just haven't decided yet whether to stay with Scoreloop (which I use in BHR) or to wait for OpenFeint to put out their Android kit.

Difficulty: Swashbuckler

I did my second go @ Swashbuckler

after a dozen failed attemps to take off, i finally managed to get into the swing of it and managed to get:

Score:  263,771
Ships Captured: 16
Reputation: Dangerous
Ended 1675.

I scored two Treasure Galleons - the first gave me 43 gems + the ship (The treasure galleon is the best in the game when you put all your mods on it).
Second gave me 19 x Rum, 23 x Gems, 20 x Sugar + food.

Swashbuckler is good but it's only hard to start. It becomes much easier when you get a ship with 20+ cannons.

How do you guys earn so much money with so few ships captured?

Just trading? Or some exploit that I have not yet fixed.  ;)

Any suggestions for the scoring system? Version 1.3.0 is going to be a huge change to the game internals, so if you have any suggestions, now is the time to make them.

My new high schore is: 177501
REtired 1683
captured: 5
Mostly Dangerous
Swashbuckler.

mainly trading. Once you get a ship that can take out a treasure ship then just rumouring to find trade factors & treasure ships. :)
Takes a while tho' cos Swash is so difficult before you get a big ship.

No exploit (which I have very mixed feelings about using anyway). Get a high-capacity ship asap, collect gems and hold for factors. Needs a little luck; one doesn't always get enough gems or factors.

Perhaps the "governor missions" are along this line, but I'd like to see a military path that could pay off. It would probably require some form of prize money, even if the prize money was far less than the value of the ship. Current problem is that if you attack everyone your home nation is at war with, alliances shift so often that you are rapidly unable to trade, which is OK from a career perspective but makes it impossible to "win". And perhaps purchased or earned commissions could lead to pensions with some value X at retirement? And then there are those sometimes-lengthy periods of peace-- but then that was a real hazard of navy service.

I remember the first time I sank a non-privateer and its home country bumped my relations, thinking, "Hey! How did they know it was me?" Doesn't seem like they should know that. Though more sunk ships could lead to stiffer resistance for a period of time. But I could be taking "sinking" a bit too literally.

Nice scores. I really need to decide on which on-line high score system to use, so that you guys have something to shoot at. And add achievements. It's just hard to get all that stuff in before the game itself is stable.

It would be great if it kept track of how many Treasure Galleons we capture.

YOU RETIRE FROM A LIFE AT SEA

You decide to retire while you are still at your peak. Your share from the sale of your ship and spoils is 428697, leaving you with a retirement fund fo 429197 doubloons.

Captain Roberts
Score 429197
Retired from life at sea on Nov. 27, 1676.
Reputation: Dreadful (ARrrrr Matey!)
Swashbuckler
Missions completed: 63
Ships sunk: 0
Ships captured: 63

I haven't actually finished this one. it's saved. I just decided to hit REtire and see what my score would be :)

I am actually starting a new game to test the BETA out (looks awesome)

And yeah regarding high scores it's a combination of knowing what to trade and what to sink. Every time I am in port I check all rumors. As soon as a treasure galley comes up I catch it. I also do the "Search for A ship" missions because often they have special treasure.

Without port attack, Score: 429,197
With port attack, Score: 1,261,296

I suggest with port attack in it's BETA right now, high scores shouldn't be counted ;)

Tho this was definately my most enjoyable game yet. A Flag Admiral of all nations and in the end I had caputured all but 3 ports for Britania.

A bit late for that. I also didn't want to "punish" players for playing the Beta.

Need to finish coding up the "counter-offensives".
