Spanish Treasure Ship
« on: June 16, 2010, 01:10:29 PM »

Well, I finally managed to capture a Spanish Treasure Galleon!  Yay!

When I gleefully opened their cargo holds, I found 21 tons of cotton, and some food.  There were some crates labelled "Gems", but they were empty (i.e. it came up with Gems: 0).

It was a little anti-climactic, I can tell you :)  Maybe the Spanish just sail around in heavily armed but empty Galleons with "treasure!" on the side just to lure hapless pirates to their doom...

I'm not sure if this was a bug or not.  I did fire two cannon shots at them to soften them up, but it was grapeshot at the decks.  I *might* had damaged the cargo, I suppose... I didn't specifically notice.

What was particularly odd was that even though I'd taken everything from the cargo hold, it was still coming up as having 41/60 cargo on the top-level looting screen...

Apparently treasure galleons make round trips of loot to Spain and you caught him returning with clothes for the colonists.  I've yet to find a Treasure Galleon, but that 41/60 thing sounds like something's up.

Have not found it yet either, and only seen the "fleet" event once (with the bug reported). Events stay too short time.

It's funny:  I started listening to rumors in the tavern fanatically; never found any fleets or treasure ships but did somehow get converted from a swashbuckling pirate to a commercial merchant.

I'll look into this.

You can destroy cargo during combat (which is what leads to the bug/feature where you have cargo items with 0 goods in them), but grapeshot at the deck should not cause this problem.

Galleons are a rare event - it's not likely to occur more than a few times during a player career. Once the mission structure starts getting expanded upon, there will probably be quests involving actual treasure fleets, assuming I can think of a good storyline.

What did you take on the Galleon with? Both times I've gone against the ship he's run away just before my ship would have sank. I often trade the bigger ships for smaller ships to save for retirement and don't always have the best ship to go against the Galleon with when it shows up.

A Frigate, with Cotton Sails and various other upgrades.

Usually, I start my career capturing ships and selling them for a profit.  This is risky, though, because you're always sailing around in either a captured Spanish Merchant Galleon or similar, which has low Rigging and can't escape things you can't afford to surrender to, or in a fairly cheap ship like a Coastal Barque or Barque or (at a pinch) Sloop that you traded in your captured ship, and the cheaper it was the more money you got for the trade-in.

After I've been going for a while, though, and I decide I've saved enough, I start looking out for a Frigate.  I might upgrade via a Brig or a Brigantine, but ideally I jump straight from whatever random ship I last seized up to the Frigate.

BTW, have you seen the list of ship types, linked from the sticky post above?

Just wait until I build the Spanish Treasure Fleet mission.  ;D

Only question is how evil I should make it. 1 Flag Galleon and 2 Treasure Galleons? Or more? Hmm...

I scored two Treasure Galleons on my 260k score:  - the first gave me 43 gems + the ship (The treasure galleon is the best in the game when you put all your mods on it).
Second gave me 19 x Rum, 23 x Gems, 20 x Sugar + food.

I was a little upset with the Treasure Galleon mission.  I was all the way in Barbados (the Easternmost port) when I received the mission.  I immediately dropped my war against the French to go plunder!  Unfortunately, it was all the way over in Santa Catalina (practically the farthest port to the West).   By the time I got there, it was too late.

Perhaps the mission should place the Treasure Galleon within range, or ensure you have sufficient time.

Thanks for the feedback.

Events are generated constantly (not when you check for rumors), so it's not really doable to have it close to your current location as the game is implemented currently. This allows you to - for instance - stumble across a Treasure Galleon even though you have never seen the rumor.

You can always check the age of a rumor in the Status view - if it is too old, it may not be worth following up on. But we probably need some more clear feedback on this in the game view.

I always seem to stumble across them in the beginning of the game, very hard to capture with an unmodified sloop. My cannon shots hit everywhere but the rigging :( But still I must try :)

I've captured a few treasure galleons, all had gems. I find if a galleon  has a weaker rigging than my ship, if I focus on weakening that I can capture it easier.

I've found you can quite easily take a Treasure Galleon with a fully upgraded Trade Galleon so long as you get in close, cross your fingers, and shoot for the rigging.

What would be nice is if you play into the early 1800s, that you'll start seeing "Ships of the Line" come in.  I know Flag Galleons are sort of those now, but it'd be nice to see 60+ gun ships.

I don't think 60+ gun ships will ever be a regular feature in the game. But the plan is that some of the game stories may have a unique ship or two in it - including massive galleons or ships of the line.

Ive found this elusive ship quite often myself have only conquered it once and got like 30,000 for it best I recall. I dont know how all yall play the game but I balance myself tween pirate&trader fairly evenly so the 1st place I go is to tavern and get the rumors 1st even before fixing ship.

found and beat this ship again yesterday got 41 gems, 25 sugars(which was kinda anti-climantic), and about 1000 doubloons but managed to sell gems for impatiantly for  796 doubloons. its a fairly easy conquer on the apprentice level as long as you got the stuff to attack rigging and a reinforced hull
