Strategy
« on: June 14, 2010, 01:05:25 AM »
I just came up with a killer strategy in this game.

Using mid difficulty.
*At start, create 4 legions.
*Take over Sicilia, Africa, Sardinia, & Gallia Cisalpina with max 4 losses (else restart).
*Defense 2 legions in Gallia Cisalpina & Africa.
*If you have any Legions left, keep pillage provinces, but don't keep any defense.
*Civilize any provinces inside your defense.
*Don't worry about loosing provinces outside defense border.
*Slowly expand the provinces that has defense, but use as few provinces defended as possible, is possible avoid provinces that border to yellow spawn provinces.
*Pillage alot. Always build full amount of Legions and keep pillaging to all but the defence are dead. They have too expense upkeep.
*Only build Limitanei in provinces bordering to spawn points.

Progress report:

*275 ACE, score 1099 - 233p/turn, 34 provinces (all). 12 Legoins, 3 Auxilia, 5 Limitanei. Defence in: Africa, Mauretania, Brittania, Germania Minor, Raetia, Illyrium (3-4 units in each, keeping defense in west side, leaving mid+east side open for pillaging next turn to get more cash). Most barbarians now have 8 strength, getting harder and harder.

*525 ACE, score 2005 - 158p/t, 18 provinces, 16 Legions, 3 Limitanei. Defence in Africa, Mauretania, Brittania, Germania Minor, Raetia, Illyrium. Most barbarians now have strength 10. Destroyed 312 barbarians, lost 182 armies. Could take back all lost provinces each turn (game stopped before I got the chance on last turn).

Game end: Civilized 13 provinces. Recruited 185 Legions, 4 Auxilia, 10 Limitanei.

Game crashed when submitting score! :(

On the next to last turn, I could not civilize provinces (had enough money, and I startex civilizing them, but when I exited the province it was not civilized, have seen his bug before).

Edit: Have a save from turn 475 ACE.

Generally good advice, I think. A lot of people are playing BHR as if this is a standard "conquer the world" wargame, and that is a mistake. It's a game about the rise and fall of empires, and the trick to scoring high points is to expand your empire without overextending it.

Pillaging (by which I expect you mean conquering enemy provinces but not garrisoning them) is something you should be a little bit careful with. If you have not already fought with them, attacking an empire will guarantee them an extra activation in the AI turn = potentially more enemies assaulting your lines. Ideally, you will usually want to eliminate an opponent when you attack them.

A little tip:
Enemy armies will always attack empty provinces in preference to defended provinces. One of the big problems with the perimeter defense, is that if a breakthrough occurs, it can be pretty devastating to your empire. There are several locations on the map where placing one auxilia will channel enemy forces in a particular direction. This can be a very cheap way to defend vital areas.

Example: if you've taken Africa, Sicily and Sardinia, a single Auxilia in Sicily will defend Italia from any attacks that break through the lines in Africa as they will chose to invade Sardinia in preference to Sicily (and from there can only continue north).

Oh but you misunderstand me :).. As I said, I think this strategy is the killer solution :).
I want to aggravate them as much as possible to get the most plunder each turn (so I can afford building all new Legions and civilizing 1-2 provinces each turn). I get 233p each turn by average, try to beat that.

What is your record score in the 3rd difficulty?

Edit: Okey I think I misread you. You said a lot of people and not meaning me :p. Yes leaving 1 aux near defense border is a good tip :) to make this killer strategy even better.

Oh and what about the 2 bugs I reported?
