What movies do you recommend that fits this genre of pirates/Caribbean/ships of 1600-1800.

A couple is:

Master and Commander. Taking place at 1805. Battles between 2 war ships. Tries to be real like.
5/5

Pirates of Caribbean trilogy. A pirates fictional tale. Have a lot of fantasy elements.
4/5 (too overrated)

I have fond memories of "The Crimson Pirate" from my childhood, but I don't dare watch it again, so I have no idea whether it holds up to viewing now.

"Cutthroat Island" was critically panned, but I thought it was an OK-ish action movie.

"Treasure Island" (1990 version). Never released on DVD though, for some reason.

"The Princess Bride" is a bit outside the genre, but one cannot talk of pirates without mentioning the Dread Pirate Roberts.

The 1951 version of "Horatio Hornblower"--that's where it's at!

And since I'm apparently stuck in the wayback machine, I'll also put in a vote for "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad".  That movie was already 30 years old when I first saw it, and it was still the coolest.

Heh - 7th Voyage of Sinbad is another one of those old movies that I don't dare watch again because of what I fear it will do to my childhood memories.  ;D

Never watched the old Hornblower movie, but the Hornblower TV series had high production values and is generally pretty excellent.
