Hello from Ancientvine
« on: October 17, 2007, 02:56:09 PM »
Hi I just found this site, wonderful! The game is looking great. I wish you the best of luck. I am also creating a roman game myself. It is a rpg game set in the 1st century AD. , near Pompeii.

I've read through some of your updates and well it's good to see what kind of pitfalls and sucesses you run into. I suppose I'll be running into the same thing!!

I don't mean to spam..but check out my site. Take the point and click tour of a virtual roman domus. All are welcome!

Cheers,
Decimus

Hi Decimus,

Welcome to the site. Have visited your site in the past; it's a very ambitious project, but I think you are taking the right approach by starting with small increments. Keep doing that, and you will at least avoid some of the pitfalls I encounted.  :) Best of luck with it.

Regards, Michael A.

Hi Michael,

Thanks! Yes starting off small is all i can do. The good news is i have a very interested programmer to help me. That only leaves me graphics and storyline and a little programing.

Any advice as to some common pitfalls? Thanks!

If there is a common pitfall, it's the one of being too ambitious.

Other than that, I guess the important thing to realize is that developing a game is just like any other job - it's hard work. People tend to think that since playing games is fun, building should be fun too, but it is in fact 95% work. Which primarily means you need oodles of tenacity and (to make this easy on yourself), always work in small increments (my biggest mistake).

Once I finish Imperium, I think the only projects I'll work on (absent someone handing me a big pile of money to do the work, of course  ;) ), will be small  projects that I think I can finish in six months or so (<- which means they'll probably  take about a year or more  :D ).

I have heard that theme before. If you are going to go into the project thinking of designing the complete game you will probably fail. Small portions at a time seem to be the way to do it. One step at a time....

Thanks and good luck!

Take a look at Indiegamer forums; they occasionally have good discussions on the problems of independent development.
