Developer's diary
« on: October 02, 2006, 02:23:12 AM »
Strategy

I like the idea of a developer's diary (see October update) as it should provide a freer forum for you to talk with us, the great unwashed.

If there could be a downside is if it engenders an increase in Maypo* activity which may have contributed to the frustration I thought I noticed on the CEiA boards at Matrix.  The more you write, the closer it may appear the game is.

How do you see it being different from teh current monthly updates?

Well, at the moment it is unworkable, as I remain without a stable broadband connection for the while.

I was really thinking of doing two things. One, write a bit on the game mechanics (which would hopefully be a bit easier on a blog than if I wrote it one the main website - a bit like the stuff I've written in the design forum), and secondly, just note down what the progress on Imperium is (much like the monthly updates, just shorter and more frequently).

As a reader, I'm a big fan of developer diaries and corporate blogs. They provide some insight into how games are made and let me track progress (sometimes it can be hard to gauge when the only info is a month apart).

As a writer, blogs are a great way to get feedback and just work stuff out. I know that comments on my blog have helped me organize my thoughts on a lot of small things.

I wouldn't worry about people confusing your writing as a sign that things are near release if you are clear on what is and is not done. You've done a good job of that so far, and no one is more excited for release than I am.

Go for it.

Well I think it's a good idea.

So - 1 maybe and 2 go for it. Thanks for the comments, guys; when I eventually get back on-line, I will look toward putting it up. Though at the current speed this is going at, it'll be Christmas before they're done.  :P

I would like to see a dev's diary also....btw why is the decelopment so slow?  :(
I hoped to play with the game this year, but I guess that is just impossible.

Part of the reason is that this game has just one developer - me - and I can only develop on Imperium in my free-time.

The other reason is that I haven't exactly gone at this optimally (funnily enough I am a stickler at these things at work, but not with my hobby... go figure  ;D ). A couple of bad decisions have been made during the life of the project which has resulted in a lot of time wasted; also, I do tend to have down periods where progress on development moves very slowly, as I spend time on other things. This summer has been one of those, due to me moving from Sweden to Norway.

Impossible... no. Improbable, yes.  ;)

just a quick message to say 'hello' to you Michael.  I hope that we will be able to see your project in 2007, at least a strong beta!  :)

Happy New Year to everyone. I can't wait to try out the game, can we see some new screenies maybe?  :)
