Spies?
« on: June 14, 2002, 09:23:22 AM »
I didn't recall seeing anything about spies on the faq. I'm sure this would be the last thing on your list, but I thought it was an interesting and important enough of a factor to discuss for a possible future inclusion in the game. The general cannot be everywhere at once, however, he needs information coming from every direction. Dispatchers and scouts could do some of this but they would be a bit too high profile for certain missions. They could warn the general of enemy activity or perhaps the enemy's future plans to launch an attack. I would say the latter would be a bit tougher to reveal unless you just want to put 2 and 2 together and figure that since the enemy troops are at your border...they're going to launch an attack. There's quite a lot that can be done. Anyway, good night, good luck.

Characters in the game can use an informations gathering order, to collect information about any region of the map - representing the gathering of information from traders, sending out of spies, etc. In general, areas adjacent to your armies/territories will be "visible" - in addition, the player will also receive information from areas with lots of traffic (i.e., trade centers), and areas which are symphatetic to the player side (e.g. the people of the area support the player's country either due to being culturally related, or having been previously owned by the player).

Is misinformation modelled or is that too low level for the simulation? - the Greeks certainly liked to tell stories about apparent deserters getting the (often Persian) king to do something stupid.

Misinformation is included insofar as you can receive incorrect strength reports of enemy armies and  garrisons, depending on your sources of information.

What about having two kinds of infos:

"diplomatic" spies that could inform you about politic, economic etc.. stuff and

"military" spies that would in fact represent the scouts (ex: roaman extraordinarii) units and give only military informations to the general for the forecoming battle?

Different sources of information provide you different kinds of information. So this is handled, albeit in an abstract way.
